Liteon SHM-165H6S and SHM-165P6S cannot read some Original DVD’s

Problem

When using original DVD’s in the Liteon SHM-165H6S or SHM-165P6S, some of the DVD’s do not read.

Symptoms

  1. The green read light on the ODD will stay on and the system will not be able to detect the DVD.
  2. Sometimes there may be a clicking or ticking noise coming from the ODD because it is struggling to read the disc.

Reason

The discs that do not work are the original DVD’s that are actually dual layer double density OTP (Opposite Track Path) which are more than 4.5GB in density. The drive pick up head is supposed to read from the inside out and then outside in.

OTP Dual DVD Read Method

Solution

There are new firmware updates available for these ODD’s to fix the problem with the Dual Layer DVD Discs.
SHM-165H6S ships with firmware version HS06 which needs to be upgraded to HS07.
SHM-165P6S ships with firmware version MS0F which needs to be upgraded to MS0M.
