Problem
When installing 2 x Leadtek 6800Gt or 6800 Ultra VGA cards on an SLI capable motherboard, the cards cannot be installed side by side due to the physical size of the heasinks.
Explanation
The heatsink at the back of the cards prevents the cards from being installed properly in the PCI-e slots. It actually separates and pushes the cards apart and prevents the installation of the SLI connector successfully.
The cards do not fit properly on the Gigabyte SLI series motherboards
The SLI connector cannot be attached to both cards
The cards heatsinks are the problem
Below is the distance between both SLI connectors place side by side
Below is the measurement of the SLI connector
The SLI connector does not fit the two cards due to the sizes. Please see measurements above.
Solution
The following 6800 series Leadtek VGA cards cannot be used in SLI mode
PX6800Ultra TDH
PX6800GT TDH
The following Leadtek 6800 series VGA cards WILL work in SLI mode
PX6800TDH
PX6800LE TDH
According to Leadtek they have said that they will improve and re-design the fan of GF6800GT and Ultra PCI-Express cards to a one slot size fan which is successful for SLI mode. The lead-time of the new design with one slot fan is around one month. Therefore, the new GF6800GT PCI-E with one slot fan will be available from April.
We have not found this problem with the Gigabyte 6800 series VGA cards since they are following the Nvidia reference design which does not have any problems when installing on SLI capable nForce4 motherboards.
