GN-A17GU cannot be configured using AP Manager Utility

Problem

It has been found that some customers cannot connect to the GN-A17GU Access Point using the AP Manager utility that is provided on the setup CD.  The AP Manager allows the user or Network Administrator to configure the Access Point for Network Access and security among other things.

Symptoms

Customers who complain of this problem will experience the following…

  • They will be able to ping the AP and will be able to connect to the WLAN without any problems
  • They will also form part of the WLAN network and will be able to see other clients and share files in the same workgroup.
  • Their IP Addresses will be controlled by the DHCP facility on the AP which is recommended since this cannot be changed at this point.
  • They WILL NOT be able to use the AP manager utility to connect to the AP via WLAN or Wired LAN through the RJ45 port located on the AP.
  • They will only be able to use the Firmware upgrade utility.

Reason

The current firmware version that ships with the newly purchased GN-A17GU AP may not work properly with AP Manager version 2.23 software which is in the setup CD.  This firmware is also incompatible with the older versions of the software like AP Manager version 2.11.

Solution

The GN-A17GU firmware will need to be upgraded to version 2.008.00.  The firmware can be updated using the Gigabyte AP Upgrade Utility that is installed with the AP Manager software.  This is the latest version of the firmware and makes the AP compatible with AP Manager 2.23.

The firmware can be downloaded from the following link…

http://tw.gigabyte.com/Communication/Support/Firmware/Firmware_AccessPoint_GN-A17GU.htm.

There is a newer AP Manager utility version 2.24 which is also available for download from the same link.

Some customers with existing GN-A17GU’s in their organisation will experience the following problems if they are adding newer GN-A17GU AP’s to create a POINT TO POINT or POINT TO MULTI-POINT infrastructure…

  1. Some may be using the older version of the AP manager (e.g. AP Manager Version 2.11) and will not connect to the newer units.  They will need to do the following…

1.       Download and Update Firmware to version 2.008.00 on all GN-A17GU AP’s with installed software.

2.       Uninstall the old version and restart the PC.

3.       Install AP Manager Version 2.23 from the new CD or download version 2.24.

4.       Configure GN-A17GU settings

  1. Some customers may install the newer version of the AP Manager from the CD and will loose connectivity with the older GN-A17GU AP’s

They will need to download and upgrade all the GN-A17GU AP’s to the latest version of the firmware to regain connectivity with the AP Manager software.
