GA-8TRS300M Freezes after Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation

Problem

When installing Windows XP SP 2 on the GA-8TRS300M, the system will freeze if the USB Port is enabled in the bios.  The installation of Windows XP Service Pack 1 does not exhibit this problem.

Symptoms

After Windows XP Service Pack 2 is installed the system will boot up but will freeze before the Windows XP Welcome or Login Screen. We have attempted to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 in the following manner…

  • Install Windows XP (no service pack), install Drivers, install service pack 1, install service pack 2 - Fail
  • Install Windows XP (no service pack), install service pack 1, install service pack 2 – Fail
  • Install Windows XP with Service Pack 2 - Fail
  • Disable USB in bios and follow above methods – PASS

This seems to be a problem specific to this motherboard.  The 8TRS350MT does not have this problem with service pack2.

 Solution

We have contacted Gigabyte for a solution and they have provided a bios version that is not available on their website as yet. This bios update solves the problem with the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on this motherboard. The bios update will be mailed to the branches.
